BINDERARY PRESENTER FAQ
Interested in sharing your knowledge with us this Binderary, but aren’t sure where to start? We’ve put some info together to try to help.
-
First things first; make sure you submit your workshop application! Workshops will be selected by our Binderary team based on skill level spread, timezones, and event interest from previous years’ data.
To submit your workshop application, you’ll need a title for your event, a brief description of the event, an estimate for how long your event will run, and a materials list for attendees.
If selected, you will receive an email confirming your acceptance and you will be added to our Binderary Presenters Discord channel. This will be the primary mode of communication between the Binderary mods, volunteers, and presenters for the duration of Binderary. You will also need to provide a related photo/image or two for your event for the Discord event banner and the Renegade website.
You will be sent a message with your Zoom link and who your volunteer host is for your workshop at least two weeks prior to the start of Binderary. We recommend you reach out to your host prior to the day of your workshop to discuss logistics.
We will be offering practice/test Zoom times for presenters and volunteer hosts to talk and interface with Zoom. If you and your host are interested in scheduling a test Zoom, please reach out to the Binderary Mods.
Test Zoom sessions must occur in January to avoid potential overlaps with our many scheduled events.
If you have any materials that should be made available during/after your session, these should be submitted to the mods for distribution at least a week before your workshop.
When your workshop day arrives, your volunteer host will assist you in running/recording the Zoom (if you are recording); they can also help call out questions from the chat, announce the start of your workshop, etc.s here
-
No, not at all! Recording your workshop is completely voluntary/optional and does not impact the workshop selection process.
-
Workshop recordings are made available on the Renegade YouTube channel in an unlisted playlist for members of the Bindery, AKA the Discord.
Snippets of workshops may also be used in the future for Renegade promotional material to promote Binderary and our educational function as an organization.
-
All selections will be made/contacted by Saturday, November 14th, 2026. Please keep an eye out for an email from binderary@renegadeguild.org.
-
Contact the Binderary Mods ASAP so that we can discuss options with you. We cannot guarantee that rescheduling your workshop will be possible.
-
Any materials to be shared for a workshop should be submitted to the Workshop Materials form once it is open.
-
Pre-recorded workshops should be submitted to the Workshop Submission form once it is open and should be submitted no less than a week before your scheduled time.

Sure! We have some guidelines for the different skill levels below:
Beginner: You have done this a few times but not many! You still need to refer to tutorials and instructions for most steps.
Amateur: You do this for the love of it! You may not have formal training, but you’re reasonably comfortable with the basics and have tried some different techniques, whether that is different binding styles or related skills-in-a-trenchcoat.
Intermediate: You are reasonably experienced in several techniques or have an in-depth knowledge of one particular topic or technique! You may have taken workshops or done other formal training.
Professional in the Industry: This is your day job, at least for the topic of your presentation.
-
Sure! We have some guidelines for the different skill levels below:
Beginner: Starting with the basics! A good entry for anyone who’s brand new or for any of us who want a refresher or to fill in gaps we may have missed.
Fundamentals: Core parts of making a book! Accessible or of interest to most skill levels, whether it’s your first book or your fiftieth.
6Intermediate: Assuming a degree of practice and knowledge with the technique specifically or book-making in general. You’ve done this before!
FAAFO: We’re striking out into new territory! Experimental, ambitious, and just plain out-of-the-box wildness here.
Informational: History, background, or other topics of general interest that are related to the subjects of bookbinding or fandom, but not a skills or instructional workshop
Hangout: Spending time together binding books, crafting, playing a game, or something else. These are planned events meant to provide/encourage community.
-
First and foremost, if there is a specific skill or topic that’s bookbinding-related or adjacent that you’re passionate about, that’s probably a great place to start!
However, we also ask in our exit survey what workshop topics participants would like to see next year so that we have an idea of what the community wants to see. Here are some of the common requests, but this is far from an all-inclusive list:
Sewn Endbands
Photographing Books
Uncommon Book Formats
HTV Tips and Tricks
Slip Covers
Boxes/Cartonage
Typesetting
Foil Quilling
Illustrations
Marbling
Workflow Planning
Titling
Edge Decorating
Book Math
Imposition
Endpaper Methods
Bookbinding on a Budget
Pamphlets
Past participants have loved attending anything related to the “Skills/Hobbies in a Trenchcoat”
