2023 Renegade Code of Conduct

This code of conduct applies only to folks who wish to be a member of Renegade Bookbinding Guild. Please read the below definitions, describing the difference between Renegade Bookbinding Guild and the Renegade Bindery (Discord), as they are different.

Renegade Bindery: A collective workshop community where fanbinders can collaborate, learn from each other, and share their work. Membership in the Bindery does not necessarily imply membership in the Renegade Bookbinding Guild. This primarily refers to the Discord, but also includes anywhere you can interact with Renegade — Dreamwidth, Tumblr, etc.

Renegade Bookbinding Guild: Members of the Renegade Bindery can claim membership of the Renegade Bookbinding Guild by agreeing to our Code of Conduct, listed below. You can submit here to accept the code and claim membership. Membership is entirely voluntary regardless of participation elsewhere. Member binders are included on our membership list on this website.

Renegade Publishing
Member Code of Conduct

  1. Applicability

    1. This code of conduct applies to formal members of Renegade Bookbinding Guild (hereafter referenced as RBG) who have made an official agreement to these codes of conduct.

    2. Membership on the Renegade Bindery Discord (hereafter referenced as RBD) server does not mandate adherence to this code of conduct. Please see the separate RBD code of conduct.

    3. Members of Renegade Bookbinding Guild need not be in the Renegade Bindery Discord, but they must adhere to the rules of the Discord. Renegade Bookbinding Guild members can be reviewed or removed from their role as a RBG member for a violation of the RBD rules.

    4. If an applicant has acted in the past in a way counter to RBG Code of Conduct or the RBD Code of Conduct, there may be a private review conducted by the membership team of their past and current actions before they are granted membership. The membership team will reach out to the applicant to resolve any conflicts.

  2. Official statements representing RBG will only be made by designated social media managers on Renegade platforms. Statements made by members on their own platforms are their own opinions.

  3. Renegade does not censor, police, or dictate the content that any of our members choose to bind. Renegade functions primarily as a teaching source for the craft of handbinding in a fannish context. Literature and writing can challenge us at times and what one person binds may make another member discomfited. Therefore, as a Renegade Bookbinding Guild member, I pledge to abide by the Three Laws of Fandom:

    1. Don’t Like; Don’t Read (DL;DR)

    2. Your Kink Is Not My Kink (YKINMK)

    3. Ship And Let Ship (SALS)

  4. Not for Resale

    1. I commit that, as a member, I will not profit from fanbinding.

    2. If I conduct business as a for-profit bookbinder, I will not profit from the binding of fanfiction.

    3. I will use RBG and RBD resources for non-profit use only.

      1. I will not use typesets created by other RBG or RBD members in order to complete commissions.

      2. Publicly available resources can be used without asking permission.

      3. Publicly available files, tutorials, videos, or resources created by RBG or RBD members should not be resold, reposted, used to create Patreon content, or otherwise profit.

    4. If I accept support for my fanbinding practice through financial contributions:

      1. I will not charge excessive or for-profit prices for fanfiction commissions, in excess of my marginal costs;

      2. I will not place fanfiction typesets behind paywalls of any kind;

      3. If I accept fanbinding commissions, I will ensure commission slots are equal access, and will not require membership to a Patreon or any other payment system in order to gain an opportunity to commission;

      4. Renegade asks that RBG members be transparent regarding the way in which they select and complete fanfiction commissions;

      5. I may accept voluntary tips from gift recipients at their discretion.

  5. Consent Matters

    1. Public Usage of Fanfiction or Transformative Works

      1. Examples of public usage include but are not limited to: posting on social media sites outside of RBD about the project, creating typesets of the work that are accessible to others, charity fundraising, and lottery give-aways.

      2. I will abide by the author's transformative work policies or explicitly stated wishes when publicly posting about binding their work for my personal use.

        1. I will look for and abide by the transformative work policy from the author on the website where the work is posted.

        2. In the absence of a policy from the author, I will abide by the policies of the website on which the work is posted.

      3. I will make a good-faith effort to secure author and artist permission before sharing typesets publicly, through RBD, or using their work for Renegade events.

      4. I will obtain explicit permission from the author or artist before using their work for at-cost binding commissions, charity fundraising, social media give-aways, or in any way using their work for monetary exchange.

    2. Personal Collections

      1. I will use my own discretion in choosing works and obtaining author permission when binding privately for my own collection or making personal gifts.

  6. Violations of this Policy

    1. Reporting Method

      1. Violations may be reported via this publicly available form. If you believe an officially recognized RBG member is in violation of this code of conduct, reach out via that form to report.

      2. Members reported for a violation will be informed that they are under review for a potential violation of RBG’s Code of Conduct.

      3. Potential violations will be reviewed by RBG management before disciplinary action occurs. A moderator will be appointed as an action officer, who will then convene a Misconduct Review Board, composed of at least three Renegade Bookbinding Guild volunteers.

    2. Method of Disciplinary Action

      1. Members found to be in violation of the code of conduct will receive one (1) warning and a one-week opportunity to correct the violation after notification.

      2. Members who remain in violation after the correction period will be expelled from Renegade Bookbinding Guild membership. This includes removal from RBG member list, and Renegade Dreamwidth group.

      3. A RBG member in violation of the RBG code of conduct may remain in the RBD server, as long as they continue to adhere to the RBD code of conduct. To reiterate: the RBD server has a separate code of conduct. At the conclusion of the Misconduct Review Board, if the member is determined to have been in violation of the code of conduct, the Board members will make a recommendation on whether the member in violation should be allowed to remain in the RBD server.

    3. Redemption Arc

      1. Expelled members may petition the RP management for reinstatement and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This code of conduct is subject to revisions at the discretion of the Renegade Volunteer team, and will be reviewed annually.
