General FAQs
There have been a lot of changes to how we are doing the retreat this year. So, whether you are brand new or this is your third time joining us, you probably have questions.
Here are some answers.
-
Great question!
Short answer: At this stage of the planning process, we don’t yet have enough information to provide an exact figure.
Longer answer: We’ve always organized these retreats with the goal of keeping the cost that attendees pay as close to the actual expenses of the event as possible. That means we won’t know how much we have to charge for the base ticket until we have gathered all of the actual costs of the event (and there are a lot of bits and pieces to account for).
We’re currently estimating base admission tickets to cost approximately $300 per person.
Because some workshops or activities will have additional costs associated with them and limited space, these types of events will be add-ons to the base ticket.
We will update these numbers as we get closer and have a better head count for the event. A final invoice is due typically 2-3 months prior to the event.
-
The mods are still in the process of determining this, but here’s what we know for sure right now:
Included in the base ticket:
Access to the Retreat venue (the gorgeous Historic Academy of Medicine)
Baked-in cost workshops and activities such as lectures, open craft spaces, story time, round robin binding, etc.
Retreat gift and badge
LOTS MORE, subject to the feedback we get from you on the Deposit Form and Workshops/Activities Applications.
Optional add-ons:
Workshops that require the purchase of additional materials (i.e., bind-along workshops where materials are provided to participants)
Renegade Merch
Special after-hours events… 👀
You can help! The Deposit Form includes questions about your preferences for certain potential expenses. We will use attendee responses to determine which of these ideas we will include in the Retreat and if they will be considered base or add-on expenses.
-
Meals: We have questions on the Deposit Form to try and determine interest in event hosted lunches or dinners.
Special activities that would include additional costs. (These will likely be add ons, but first we would like to gauge community interest.)
-
Renegade Retreat tickets are purchased in two phases.
1st Phase: The Deposit
Now through December 31st or event sell-outHow much is it?
$120(+tax). Deposits are non-refundable and as affordable as we can reasonably make them.
What is the deposit for?
Deposits secure your spot at the 2027 Renegade Retreat and help provide an expected head count for the event so the final cost per person can be more accurately determined.
When can I submit my deposit?
Now through December 31st, 2026, or until we sell out.
How do I submit a deposit?
Deposits are collected through Eventbrite, in tandem with the submission of the Deposit Form. The password to access the Eventbrite can be found in the Discord server.
2nd Phase: The Final Ticket
Remaining Balance Owed on Your Base Ticket + Optional Add-Ons
February 2027How much will the final balance for the base ticket be?
TBD (see How much does the Retreat cost? section above for current estimate info)
What is the final ticket?
Your final ticket includes the base ticket that everyone needs for admission to the event (everything included in What’s included in the base ticket and what is an add-on?) PLUS any optional workshop/activity add-on selections you make. The total cost of your final ticket may be different from someone else’s depending on what extras you choose to add.
When can I pay my final invoice?
We currently expect final costs and add-ons to be available by early February 2027.
How do I pay for my final ticket/purchase optional add-ons?
Final ticket payment/optional add-on purchases will be collected through Eventbrite. An announcement will be made in the Discord server when this becomes available.

You may have heard the story about the 2025 Retreat selling out in 21 hours. And that may make you nervous. Understandable!
The 2027 Retreat mods have made sure to secure a location that will allow us to grow and hopefully not sell out so quickly.
The mods are planning for 125-175 attendees at this year’s event (more than double our 2025 Retreat attendance).
We will also provide updates on expected attendance in the Discord server to let folks know as we approach maximum capacity.
However if you’re still concerned about things selling out, we recommend that you complete the Deposit Form and submit your deposit ASAP to secure your spot.
-
The Eventbrite password can be found in the 2027 Retreat announcement in the Main Bindery Discord server.
Why is there a password?
The Renegade Retreat is for Renegade Bindery and Bookbinding Guild members. Therefore, we want to make sure that access to purchase Retreat tickets is limited to folks who have joined our community.
Anyone is welcome to join the Discord; please check Renegade’s About page for more information.
-
In SOOO many ways!!! To accommodate growing demand, the Renegade Retreat has shifted to more of a conference/convention model.
What isn’t Renegade managing for attendees anymore?
Lodging
Renegade has arranged two different hotel blocks for your booking convenience, but participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation.
See the Hotels & Lodging section of the FAQs for more detailed information.
Meals
We want your feedback on the possibility of a catered on-site lunch for both Retreat days, so please be sure to weigh in on that section of the Deposit Form.
Participants are responsible for their own breakfasts and dinners.
Transportation
Attendees are responsible for arranging their own transportation both to and form Atlanta and to and from the event venue.
See the Transportation section of the FAQs for more information.
Why did this change?
SIZE! We are so lucky that this Retreat keeps growing! At the same time, we have now reached a magnitude where we had to change some of the ways the Retreat operates. This way, our mods can focus on making the event the best it can be!
ACCESSIBILITY! Letting participants handle their own lodging, meals, and transportation allows for more independence and flexibility to meet a wide variety of budgets, priorities, needs, and restrictions.
What isn’t changing?
We will still be offering a variety of workshops and activities baked directly into the base cost of the event, including beloved favorites like the Reading Room (formerly known as the Library), materials swap, and more! You will still receive a Retreat gift and badge. We are still going to have a fun, crafty, fandom, crazy time with our bookbinding friends.
Renegade Retreat 2027! Now with 100% less roosters! (We hope.)

Please note that as the Retreat is still developing, the mods may not have all information available at the time of your request.
Event Schedule, Workshops, & Activities
Retreat events will run from the afternoon of Friday, April 16th until the afternoon or evening of Sunday, April 18th. Exact event run times are TBD, pending a finalized schedule.
Please find more information about the Retreat schedule, workshops, and activities below.
-
The event schedule is still in early stages, but we can promise that Retreat activities will run from the afternoon of Friday, April 16th until the afternoon or evening of Sunday, April 18th.
In order to maximize their Retreat attendance at previous Retreats, many out-of-town folks have chosen to arrive Thursday and leave Monday. Our mod team has created a local tourist map to help you plan your time in the Hollywood of the South, so please check it out for points of interest recommendations!
-
While the final schedule will be dependent on what workshops and activities folks have offered to host, Retreat events will be scheduled throughout the available time each day!
Mods will ensure the schedule protects breaks for meals. Attendees are welcome to come and go as they please, but be advised that we do plan to have very full days scheduled, kicking off in the morning (estimated to be between 8 and 10 AM) and wrapping up in the evening.
-
Workshops and activities are hosted by attending community members (Binderary, live and in-person!). We’re collecting proposals right now (check out more detailed FAQs and submit your workshop proposal/activity idea(s) HERE!), but in the past we’ve had workshops on endbands, collage fanzines, linocut stamps, and a round robin binding, to name a few. Past activities have included passport stamping, tabletop games, a bird walk, and a costume party.
More info on workshops and activities will be made available at a later date.
-
Yes! Workshop information will list their expected skill level for participants from the following categories:
Beginner: Starting with the basics! Requires absolutely no specialized knowledge or experience in bookbinding whatsoever.
Fundamentals: Core parts of making a book! Assumes attendees will have some basic bookbinding knowledge (i.e., parts of a book, typical materials and tools, some basic techniques, etc.), but does not require extensive experience.
Intermediate: Now we're really getting into it! Assumes attendees are experienced binders with multiple finished projects under their belts. While the specific workshop technique may be new, the general principles of bookbinding are not.
FAAFO: We're striking out into new territory! It doesn't matter how much or how little experience an attendee has because no one's ever done this before anyway. Experimental, ambitious, and just plain out-of-the-box wildness here.
-
If you are interested in hosting a workshop or activity, please let us know by submitting your idea via the Workshops & Activities Application Form.
Mods will do their best to fit in as many of the offered workshops and activities as the schedule can accommodate, but we cannot guarantee that we will have room for all submitted ideas in the final schedule.
-
For workshops, yes, you must be willing to serve as the instructor. For activities, we’d love for you to execute your vision, but if you can’t, that’s okay!! Submit your idea anyway for consideration by our Activities team of mods and volunteers.
-
Workshops are conducted with the goal of learning something new or refining a skill. They can include bookbinding-related lectures, technique demonstrations, and hands-on work. Activities are mostly just for fun and camaraderie!
-
And we have answers! Lots of ‘em! Please check out our Workshop Instructor FAQ and Activity Host FAQ for more information before contacting the mod team, to make sure your question hasn’t already been answered :)
-
Absolutely! In fact, we’re counting on it. Be on the lookout for our Volunteer Sign-Up! This will likely go out in January 2027, alongside schedule announcements. In the meantime, check out our Workshop Assistant FAQ and Activity Assistant FAQ for more information.
-
We’re introducing a new workshop activity this year: Mentorship! This will allow attendees to request and book 30 minutes of time with an experienced Mentor to discuss or demonstrate a particular skill or technique one-on-one or in a group setting of up to 3 mentees.
-
If you are interested in becoming a Mentor, please let us know by signing up via the Workshops & Activities Application Form. Learn more about Mentors by checking out our Mentor FAQ!
Mods will do their best to balance the Mentorship pool and cannot guarantee that all applicants will be selected.
-
There will always be some ongoing activities that folks can drop in or out of at any time.
These typically include:
The Reading Room (formerly known as The Library): A quiet space where you can admire and browse through books that your fellow binders have brought. Leave a comment on the catalogue card to share the love!
General crafting: Bookmaking and other crafting is always happening at the Retreat.
Peruse the materials swap area: Find some materials to complete a project you are currently working on or take some home for the next one!
Hang out with your fellow Renegaders: We have the whole building to ourselves, so there should always be someone around to chat with.
The Reading Room (previously The Library)
-
No. Due to the growth of the Retreat and the number of books being shared, Renegade Retreat attendees will not be allowed to remove books from The Reading Room for the duration of the Retreat. If you are the owner of the book, you may come and go with it as you please.
-
All efforts will be made to have a volunteer supervising The Reading Room during its open hours. However, the Renegade Bookbinding Guild is not responsible if any books are damaged and/or lost during this event.
-
TBD! Space-dependent, and largely dependent on how many attendees we have.
